Last Wednesday we took part in the “IoT Security & Blockchain” meetup at the Next Big Thing AG (NBT) office in Berlin. We are very happy to speak in front of nearly 100 blockchain enthusiasts that were listening to the pitches of Dominik Schiener from IOTA and our “Chief Scientist” Prof. Dr. Sebastian Gajek.

After a short introduction from NBT’s CTO Jasmin Skenderi, Dominik and Sebastian shared their thoughts on where they see the future for blockchain and how they aim to shape the blockchain and IoT revolution with their achievements.
Thereby, Dominik pointed out that blockchain technologies for IoT need to overcome the current efficiency problems, if they should be used and serve the data transactions by billions of IoT devices. Hence, his “Tangle” application is supposed to tackle this problem, enabling costless, real time data transfer between IoT devices.

Sebastian however stressed that present hardware and software platforms for IoT are not ready to provide reliable autonomous blockchain transactions. IoT devices are simple computers and can easily be hacked. IoT malware will modify smart contracts in a similar vein it modifies transactions in online-banking nowadays. As a countermeasure he introduced the notion of “proof of kosherness” enabling IoT devices to prove that they are in a secure and trustworthy state. The proof is appended to the smart contract and thus can be implemented within various blockchain technologies.
